This series on “Therapeutic efficacy of Adipose Tissue Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Diseases and Surgery of Gastrointestinal Tract” is edited by Dr. Tevfik Tolga Sahin, Dr. Egemen Cicek, and Dr. Basri Satilmis. This series aims to bring the physicians in the field of gastrointestinal surgery, the summary of the basic science and clinical research being performed regarding the role of adipose derived stem cells.

Tevfik Tolga Sahin
Inonu University Liver Transplant Institute, Malatya, Turkey

Tevfik Tolga Sahin was born in 1978 and received his preliminary education in United States of America, Iowa City Iowa in Roosevelt Primary School. After returning to Turkey, he graduated Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2001. He completed his residency in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery ın 2006. He earned his PhD in Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine Department of Surgery II in Japan and he worked actively on oncolytic viral therapy for cancer. He became associate professor of surgery in 2012 and was appointed as full professor of surgery in 2019. He is attending surgeon in Inonu University Liver Transplant Institute and he is currently the senior scientist of Hepatology Research Laboratories in the same institute. His main area of interest is pancreatic carcinogenesis, antitumor immunity in cancer and also use of mesenchymal stem cells for treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases including acute liver failure. He has written over 5 book chapters and has over 130 internationally peer reviewed studies.

Egemen Cicek
Inonu University Liver Transplant Institute, Malatya, Turkey

Dr Egemen Cicek graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2007. He completed his residency in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine department of General Surgery in 2014. He did sub-specialization in Gastroenterological Surgery in Inonu University Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery between 2016 to 2019. He worked in Hatay Municipal Hospital between 2019 and 2020. He was appointed as Assistant Professor of Gastroenterological Surgery to Inonu University Faculty of Medicine department of General Surgery in the fall of 2020. His areas of interest are gastrointestinal malignancies, bariatric surgery and Liver Surgery and transplantation. He performs basic science research in acellular dermal matrices and use of adipose tissue derived stem cells in treatment of various liver and gastrointestinal diseases.

Basri Satilmis
Hepatology Research Laboratory, Liver Transplantation Institute, Inonu University, Malatya, Turkey

Dr. Basri Satilmis is currently one of the main investigators of Hepatology Research Laboratory of Liver Transplantation Institute, Inonu University. He received PhD degree from Department of Medical Biochemistry, Health Science Institute, Inonu University in 2015. His research objectives are signal transduction in hepatocellular cancer and use of adipose-derived stem cells in liver diseases. He has published 12 peer-reviewed papers in international journals.
