Research Interests: the surgical treatment of gastric cancer

Prof. He is the president of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Director of Department of Surgery, Gastric Cancer Diagnosis and Research Center and Gastrointestinal Surgery Center of the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University.

After graduating from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences and joining the university, Prof, he was trained at the University of Hong Kong and then became a postdoctoral fellow at University of Utah, USA. In 2003, Prof. He became the professor and chief physician in the Department of Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences.

Prof. He has been engaged in general surgery for more than 30 years, with a special interest in the surgical treatment of gastric cancer. He pioneered the standard D2 and D2 (+) lymph node dissection and vagina vasorum lymph node dissection for gastric cancer in China. The 5-year survival of his patients with advanced gastric patients after surgical treatment reached 60%, a figure comparable to those in developed countries. Prof. He is skillful in the surgical treatment and multidisciplinary treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, colorectal polyps and polyposis, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign anal diseases. In addition, he has rich experiences in total mesorectal excision, function-preserving surgery for low rectal cancer, total colectomy, and J-pouch coloanal anastomosis for rectum colon. Prof. He has accumulated rich experiences in the management of pancreatic diseases, retroperitoneal tumors, esophageal cancer, and benign esophageal diseases. He takes a lead in performing surgeries including esophageal reconstruction with stomach or colon, Whipple procedure, and digestive tract reconstruction. Prof. He is also skillful in using the da Vinci robotic system, laparoscopy, and gastrointestinal endoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

Currently Prof. He is a member of the Asian Surgical Society, a member of Chinese Society of Surgery, deputy chief of the Gastrointestinal Panel of Chinese Society of Surgery, vice chairman and secretary-general of the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon Committee of the Chinese College of Surgeons, vice chairman of the Gastric Cancer Association, Chinese Anti-cancer Association (CACA), deputy chief of the Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO), and a member of the Second Session of Medical Education Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.

Prof. He also serves as the Chairman of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association, Chairman of the Gastroenterology Professional Committee of Guangdong Health Management Association, Chairman of the Digestive Surgery Management Branch of Guangdong Medical Industry Association, Director of the 7th Council of Guangdong Medical Association, Executive Director of the 3rd Council of Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association (GACA), vice Chairman of GACA Gastric Cancer Professional Committee, vice Chairman of GACA Pancreatic Cancer Professional Committee, member of the Standing Committee of GACA Colorectal Cancer Professional Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the Eighth Council of the Surgery Branch of Guangdong Medical Association, a judge of the National Natural Science Foundation and Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, a judge of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and a judge of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award.

Prof. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Digestive Oncology (electronic version), Deputy Editor of the editorial department of the Chinese Archives of General Surgery (electronic edition), and a member of the editorial boards of over 10 peer-reviewed journals including Annals of Surgery, Journal of Surgical Oncology, Chinese Journal of Surgery, China Journal of Practical Surgery, and Chinese Journal of General Surgery. So far, Prof. He has published over 350 scientific articles in top journals including Cancer Research, International Journal of Cancer, Cancer Letters, and Annals Surgical Oncology.

Due to his great achievements in medical practices and scientific education, Prof. He was also a recipient of many awards. Specifically, his study "Clinical and basic research on strategies to improve the surgical efficacy of gastric cancer" won the Medical Scientific and Technological Progress Award (second class) of the Chinese Medical Association and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (second class) in 2005; his study "Function-preserving surgery for rectal cancer" won the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (first class) in 2006; his study “Surgical treatment of advanced gastric cancer and its basic research” won the Chinese Medical Award (third class) and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (second class) in 2010.
